Three Things To Consider When Choosing a Home Based Business

So, you’ve decided you want to get off the fast track, and own your own home based business. But what type of home business should you start? Well, before you quit your day job, think about these things.

  1. Can You See Yourself Doing It In 10 Years?A home business isn’t meant to be a short term project. You should be in it for the long haul. So look at your life in 5 years, 10 years, and 20 years. Can you still see yourself doing whatever it is you have in mind in the the future? If not, you may want to rethink your plan.I know someone who was looking at getting into a MLM company. The company was very reputable and had a good track record and products that this person liked. However, when she talked about the business it was always something like “well, I’ll just do it until I make x amount of money, then I’ll do what I really want to do.” So she tried the MLM, and ultimately, it didn’t work out like she wanted. If she had listened to me first, I could have saved her some frustration. If you like the products, buy them, but don’t start a home business your heart isn’t in.
  2. Can You Afford the Start Up?All home businesses have a start up cost associated with them, whether is it an MLM, an internet business, a franchise, or any other type of home based business. And when I say start-up, I don’t just mean the first week. I mean can you afford to keep your business up and running for a full year? If the answer is no, you either need to reevaluate your home business selection, or secure some other sort of financing for yourself. Failure to plan for your entire first year, is ensuring that your first year will be a failure.
  3. What Is Your Instinct Telling You?When you think about your home business, what is your gut reaction? Is it butterflies of excitement, or gastro-intestinal upset of impending doom? Once you know your reaction, check the gut instinct of someone you trust and see how they feel as well.Sure you may think that an outdoor snow-cone business may be just the thing, especially since there aren’t any others in town. But your trusted friend may point out, that the reason there are no others in town is because you live in Northern Alaska, and there really isn’t much of a demand for outdoor snow-cone businesses!Or your trusted friend may point out, that sure, most people wouldn’t think it would work, but that once upon a time they heard a story about two guys who started a computer company in their garage, and it turned out very well for them, and hey, you’re just the person to try this sort of thing and make it work!

Once you’ve thought out all these points, you will be closer to determining which home business is right for you. However, as with life, there are no guarantees, so don’t wait too long to decide, or else you may find someone else has already taken your great idea!
